Besides fighting crime, the Pacifica Police Department seeks to ensure the general safety of the citizens it serves. Public education regarding specific and proven measures for safety in a variety of situations is an ongoing effort as the department provides instructional outreach at schools, to organized community groups and at public events, such as Pacifica's annual Fog Festival.

Call the main business line with any questions or concerns regarding general safety and ask for the crime prevention officer. The lobby of the police station also contains a literature rack with helpful brochures on a variety of safety issues.

Living with California Wildlife

Although Pacifica is not a rural area, it’s important to remember that many areas of Pacifica are bordered by parks and open space that are home to all kinds of wildlife. The police department has increasingly received reports of encounters with wildlife such as coyotes, and sightings of a mountain lion. Wild animals such as coyotes and mountain lions may see domesticated dogs and cats as prey and will act accordingly. The United States Department of Agriculture provides the following information:

  • Do not feed coyotes or other wildlife.
  • Eliminate sources of water around your home.
  • Do not discard edible garbage where wildlife can get to it.
  • Secure garbage containers and eliminate garbage odors.
  • Feed pets indoors whenever possible. If you do feed your pets outdoors, pick up any leftovers.
  • Trim any shrubbery so you do not provide hiding cover for wildlife.
  • Don’t leave small children unattended in areas wildlife has been frequenting.
  • Don’t allow pets to run free. Walk your dog on a leash and accompany your pets outside, especially at night.

Visit the California Department of Fish and Wildlife website for more information about co-existing with our wildlife.
